What does Advascan stand for?

Advascan is simply a marketing name formed by extracting parts of the function of the service: Advance Scanning of email.

How does Advascan work?

Advascan operates within the internet using a selection of highly rated Anti virus and Anti spam software, together with it’s own patented technology to scan and filter email streams before they reach you. Advascan works by identifying, removing and placing in secure quarantine areas, potentially damaging virus infected and Spam emails. The remaining “clean” emails are then delivered to you.

Its as if Advascan were your own private PO Box with a squad of policemen on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week checking what is being deposited there.

What happens to the unwanted emails held back by Advascan?

Unwanted email is held on dedicated Advascan servers within the Internet in a private secure area only accessible by you. You can visit this area at anytime using your web browser to see what emails have been quarantined for you. You can also adjust the settings that determine what is and what isn’t Spam to suit your needs. You can even set up a daily email that tells you what emails have been placed in quarantine for you.

The full range of available features is fully described in the comprehensive User Guide that accompanies the service.

Do I have to download software and install it on my PC and Lap top computers?

No. Advascan is a fully managed service that resides within the Internet. You simply use your existing email software to send and receive emails.

Why is Advascan better than Anti -Virus or Anti-Spam software I can buy?

Advascan uses multiple Anti-Virus scanners and latest Spam blocking techniques which are always kept up to date and under expert human surveillance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Software installed on PC’s or Laptops is nearly always out of date, regularly exposing users to the latest malicious email campaigns.

How do I use Advascan?

You simply ask your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to deliver your emails to Advascan instead of < your current Mail Server or POP3 mailbox.

How does my ISP do this?

They change your Mail Exchange or “MX” Records so that your incoming emails are sent to Advascan.

How do I collect my email once Advascan has processed it?

As you normally do.

Advascan will provide you with POP3 connection details together with a unique Login Password and User Name that you enter just once into your email programme on your PC or Laptop.

What happens if I have my own mail server and do not have a POP3 mailbox?

If you have your own web site or domain name with email addresses then you still ask your postman (your ISP or Hosting organisation) to deliver all your email to Advascan by changing your Mail Exchange or “MX” Records. This is once only at set up. You continue to collect your email from your same Mail Server after Advascan starts to work for you; in fact you continue to use your email in exactly the same way as you do now.

What happens if I get sent an email with a virus?

Advascan will place it in the online Infected Quarantine store and send you an email telling you this has occurred. You can login to your web interface, called the Administration Management Interface (AMI) and view details of the message online, and at no risk to you. If you decide do you want the message delivered you can ask us and we will release it from the quarantine store for you.

What happens if I get sent an email that is Spam?

Advascan will place it in your online Spam Quarantine store and once a day send you an email detailing all the Spam stopped for you in the previous 24 hours. You can preview the contents of the Quarantine store at anytime via the AMI. Then tick a box to keep any you want or delete all.

What happens if I get sent an email that you think is Spam, but I actually want?

Advascan will place it in the online Spam Quarantine store and once a day send you an email detailing all the Spam stopped for you in the previous 24 hours. You can then perform a range of actions for each Spam held online for you. If you decide do you want the message delivered you can simply have it forwarded.

How can I make sure I always get emails from my friends or colleagues?

You can enter known and trusted correspondents email addresses in the White List via the web interface. Email addresses entered into the White List will not be considered as Spam although they will always still be screened for possible virus infection.

How can I make sure I never get emails from certain people?

You can enter known “bad” correspondents email addresses in the Black List via the AMI. Email addresses entered into the Black List will simply be dropped.

What happens if I still receive some emails that I consider to be Spam?

You just forward them to Advascan and we will use them to train our filters so that the next time a similar email is sent to you we will stop it and put it in you quarantine store.

Will I lose any emails I want?

No, Advascan never deletes emails unless they have been held in your online store for a long time. (typically 30 days or more). If you think an email has been sent to you and you cant find it, then you can view those emails quarantined by Advascan, by visiting your web held quarantine mail. More details and technical stuff can be found in the user guide.
